The Suffering Servant in Our Place

Today’s passage is the apex of Isaiah’s Fourth Servant Song, commonly known as Isaiah 53. Isaiah 53:5 is the middle verse of the middle stanza of the song. Everything before it builds to this crescendo, and everything after it flows out from it.

And at the heart of this verse is a doctrine that many find troubling. How are we to understand what Isaiah says? And what difference does that make for us as we encounter a new year?
