This Weekend at First (1/15/16)

This is a very important week for us here at First, as we begin our Season of Fasting and Prayer on Sunday. Let’s lean in to all that God will do for us and through us.

Helpers needed tomorrow

Our Christmas trees are saggy and sad, in need of a new home on the curb. So we need at least a half dozen guys to volunteer an hour of your time Saturday morning at 9am to help Winston move them out before worship Sunday. If you are available, please reply to this email to indicate that you can come.

Sunday school

All Bible studies will meet Sunday morning at 9.45am. Make your plans to be there!

Sunday worship

Here are the songs we plan to sing:

  • “Crown Him with Many Crowns”
  • “What a Glorious Mystery”
  • “Jesus Paid It All”
  • “He Is Jesus”
  • “He Will Hold Me Fast”
  • “Before the Throne of God Above”

To hear these songs and more, go to our free Spotify playlist and listen.

The sermon text will be Luke 18.1–8, and the message will be delivered by Nick Peterson.

Season of Fasting and Prayer

Sunday begins our annual Season of Fasting and Prayer. A prayer guide will be available Sunday, including prayer events all over the city. Additionally you can subscribe to our calendar at our website, http://www.firstnyc.org, where all the prayer events are listed. Please join this crucial opportunity to confess our great weakness and to cry out for God’s even greater power to be demonstrated in, for, and through our church.

Worship Team Vision Casting Dinner

If you would like to serve during our Sunday worship services, please make your plans to attend a dinner at the church Saturday, January 23 at 6pm. This includes people of a wide variety of interests: from instrumentalists, singers, and worship leaders, to audio-visual volunteers and setup/teardown crews. Please contact Steven Mann for more information.

Annual Meeting

The Annual Meeting will be held next Sunday after morning worship during the luncheon, and all members are encouraged to attend. This is a very important gathering during which we will vote on new members, the 2016 budget, and a range of officers. These members are finishing their terms:
  • Deacon: Winston J, Nick P
  • Trustee: Elsie C, Wendy C, Jan R
  • Clerk: Donna S
Joy Davidman Book Event
Join us for a conversation with the author of the new critically-acclaimed biography of Joy Davidman, the wife of C. S. Lewis. The evening will begin with a talk by the author, Abigail Santamaria, about Ms. Davidman, which will be followed by an audience question-and-answer session. Afterwards you can meet the author, purchase your copy of Joy, and have it signed. This is a great opportunity to invite your friends from the neighborhood to our church. Promotional cards are available in the lobby and in the Chapel.
See you Sunday!
